One thing I cannot conceive in life is losing one's mum!!! I don't know why, I've always had a problem with abandonment!! My mum always tells me how at 3 years old, I screamed in the cinema watching the Fox and the Hound!!!
At my age, unfortunately, more and more of my friends are dealing with this incredible difficult hurdle. First my Poor Fiance, a few friends in Belgium, and recently two of my close pals - One of them the night of her wedding!!!! I mean, there are no words!!!!!! Unless you're a musician!
And this song was written by one of my friends who lost her mum last month!!
I love it!!!!

Uni stories
At Uni, as I explained in this first post, I participated a few times at shows about Uni life, professors etc... singing on stage. In 2002, I did it again:
The original is from the Belgian band Vaya Con Dios although after a quick search on youtube, it looks like the official original might be form LesPaul and Mary Ford, but stolen from a Serbian traditional song!!!! Woahh I didn't know this song had so much history!!!
Anyway, as the revue requires, I changed the lyrics to a story about the lecturers you meet during your candidatures i.e. the first two years at Uni when you're doing a 4-year degree. Specific details about mine and hard it was to go through those years!!
Funnily anough during the show the recording didn't work, so after the show I was asked to sing it again so I would have a souvenir of the night! So the cheers after the performance are actually from my friends who did the show with me, not the audience that night. The guitar player was not PF but it was his guitar - long before PF and I became involved in fact!!!!
The sound is really not good as I found the CD recently and it was in a very bad condition!!!

Criminal By Britney Spears
I've been a fan of Brit Brit for many years, in fact possibly right from the beginning in '98.
I remember buying her second album (before buying the first one) in 2000 from a supermarket in Belgium. I cherished it before the 3rd album came out a year later!!! It was only then I decided if I was gonna be a fan I needed to buy the first album too to complete my collection...
But anyway, that would be for another story!!!
Tonight, I was practicing on my guitar, as I usually do when PF (Poor fiance) is gone to work (ie. playing in a duet in bars). I've recently started singing at the same time as playing which is really not easy!! lol
I've also only started playing end of February this year, so really it's early days but I love it!
PF - who's my occasional teacher ;) - told me I had to learn songs I love to progress faster, so of course I've asked him to show me how to do a few Brit Brit songs!!! You should have seen the look on his face! I think he thought that at some point we could maybe play some blues together, a bit of Rn'R... but really babe, I'm a pop girl!!!
Out of her latest and 7th album, the track Criminal is the funny one out of the album (she always does one!) and is kind of acoustic-ish already except for the big beat on top of it!
I'm only learning of course, but I've tried to record the beginning of the song. I'll practice some more and will post better versions later, hopefully we can see improvements on both the singing (I won't have to think about my hands) and the playing (I won't have to think about the lyrics!!).

Life is a long road
As far as I can remember I've always sang!!! In my room, in my shower, at school, everywhere, all the time!!!
At University, every year, with the student union, we would organise a show mocking lecturers/student life/etc... Those shows comprised stand up comedy and songs. Songs would be known songs but with altered lyrics.
The first time I participated in that show was in 2000, I was then in my 3rd year of Chemistry degree (yep I know! but isn't that fitting - basic elements being at the source of all creations around???lol). I have a video tape of it but I haven't transfered it yet onto DVD - all in good times...
But I do have the show of 2001 on CD. Recently I found it amongst all my CDs when I was clearing up my things and decided to upload it on Youtube (where else?).
This song is from Daniel Balavoine, a famous singer and amazing artist/person who unfortunately lost his life in a stupid helicopter accident while visiting developing countries for his charity work.
The song is called "La vie ne m'apprend rien" but I re-named it "La vie est un long chemin" which means Life is a long road. I changed the lyrics to try to explain how student life is, how you learn so many things about not only your subject of choice but also relationships, culture, independence, etc...
I'm not hugely proud of my singing as I had a broken voice and some points it was difficult to keep notes!
Basically you have to imagine intensive rehearsals in a very cold venue, a day or 2 before the opening! Not the greatest idea to keep your voice!!!
I know I should have known better, but yep there was alcohol involved, smoke inhalation - in those days, there was no non-smoking areas! - and very little sleep!!!
Also - yes I know I'm trying to find excuses - this was in front of 300 people amongst which my parents, all my friends and more frightening all my professors/lecturers!!!
So at two points, I am aware that I do sing out of tunes but it's unfortunately due to stress and broken voice!!
Oh yeah, bless him, the guy playing on the keyboard did do a mistake at the beginning of the song but I think it gives charm to the song...
Also, at the end, he stopped playing because I was supposed to sing but I got blocked and didn't know when to start the next chorus, in the end the effect is really good. I started singing alone and he caught up with the playing!!! lol
